Prediction equations for total aflatoxin from weight percent of bright greenish-yellow florescent (BGYF) particles and kernels of unground corn were dependent on originating farm. Ratios of G1 to B1 and B2 to B1 indicated differences in fungal populations between farms. Based on farm-to-farm differences in fungal contamination, differences in prediction models, and the imprecision of estimated aflatoxin level, BGYF is unsatisfactory as a precise quantitative predictor of aflatoxin level over a wide area. Differences in fungal metabolities between farms appear to be the major problem in developing a widely applicable procedure.
