The Japanese functional food market is very advanced and dynamic, with much product development activity. The government approves “foods for specified health use” (FOSHU), which can then carry both a specific health claim and the FOSHU label on the package. The FOSHU system has both advantages and disadvantages. A detailed example of a FOSHU-labeled product is given.
