Grain-based Foods: What’s New and What’s Next

L. Dornblaser. Mintel International, Chicago, IL. Cereal Foods World 53(1):29-31.

Cereal-based categories have been on a bit of a roller-coaster ride in the last several years, with new product introductions in the United States rising, falling, and rising again from year to year. Regardless of the variable nature of the introductions, there have been some significant and interesting new products introduced to the market in the last year in the United States and also in other countries. This article will take a look not only at the new product introduction numbers, but also at some of the key product introductions from 2007. In addition, I’ll make a few predictions on where I see grain-based categories moving in the future. A variety of issues affect grain-based products. They can suffer the whims of a fickle consumer (High carb? Low carb? No carb?), changes in labeling regulations, and the growing impact of other forces, such as consumer magazines, farmers markets, and an increased interest in the environment. As a result, the new product introduction figures for grain-based categories have gone up and down in recent years.
