Charles P. Berry

Charles Prescott Berry, 75, of Bend, OR, died January 20, 2019, at home surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with cancer. Charley was born on February 11, 1943, in Minneapolis, MN, to Delores Prescott Berry and Charles Manly Berry. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Jeanne Reagan Berry; their daughter Danielle (partner Christopher Finger and daughters Della and Aria) of Kenmore, WA; his son Craig (children Hannah and Preston) of Little Rock, AR; and his sister Jane Tracy (husband Byron and children Sarah and Alan) of Apple Valley, MN. Charley was predeceased by his parents and two brothers, Thomas and George.

Charley was fascinated with science from an early age, researching every new interest with persistence and ferocity. Following graduation from Roosevelt High School in Minneapolis, MN (1961), he obtained a B.S. degree in biology and chemistry from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, MN (1965); an M.S. degree from North Dakota State University (NDSU) in Fargo, ND (1967); and a Ph.D. degree in cereal biochemistry from NDSU (1971).

He worked for several food companies in the Midwest, including General Foods, Battle Creek, MI; Fairmont Foods, Omaha, NE; and Benco, Zanesville, OH, before meeting the love of his life and moving to the Pacific Northwest. Charley married Jeanne Reagan from Medina, WA, in 1974, and they made their home in Yarrow Point, WA. In the Seattle area, he worked for Fisher Flour Mills and Crescent Foods. In 1979 he joined Continental Mills, where he ran the R&D Department, retiring as a senior vice president in 2006.

Charley served on the Washington Wheat Commission and the Board of Regents for Bastyr University. He was an active member of AACC International, serving on the AACCI Board of Directors (2002–2003), Scientific Advisory Panel, Publications Panel, and Soft Wheat and Flour Products Technical Committee.

Charley loved the outdoors, and in 2006, Charley and Jeanne moved to Bend, OR, initiating his three sport days: morning snowboarding, golf in the afternoon, and relaxing with a bit of fishing in the evening. He also enjoyed traveling in pursuit of his hobbies. Charley was an open and honest friend, a giving mentor, and a devoted family man.

Sharpe has more than 20 years of experience with Bühler, working across all functions of the organization. Most recently, Sharpe served as president and CEO of Bühler Aeroglide in Raleigh, NC. As head of the Aeroglide business unit, Sharpe built a culture of trust, respect, and open communication, transforming that organization into one where entrepreneurship, accountability, and innovation flourishes. In his new role, he will apply that same transformational leadership to the North American sales and service organization.
