An automated liquid chromatographic (LC) system is described for quantitative analysis of carbohydrate mixtures. Dextrose, fructose, and related saccharides of commercial sweeteners are separated on cation- exchange resins with water as the eluent. The column systems described give rapid, high-resolution separations on the stable baseline---features which allow accurate and precise quantitation. All the carbohydrate components of a sweetener elute from the columns, permitting quantitation on a simple area normalization basis. No supporting analyses are required. Analysis time ranges from 5 to 30 min. The instrumentation described includes a custom-built automatic sample injector/system controller, eoupled with a conventional LC and a computing integrator.
