Sustainability from grains to ingredients B. DIETRICH (1). (1) Bunge, St. Louis, MO, U.S.A.
What is the current state of agricultural sustainability in the United States? What do we mean when we talk about agricultural sustainability? What is driving the need for sustainable agriculture and how should we measure it? This presentation will discuss a bit of the history of sustainability and how the U.S. grower has done over the past 30 years. Measuring sustainability can be done but it is not without its pitfalls and difficulties. Avoiding regulation and certification is certainly desirable but the long term nature of measuring sustainability flies in the face of our short-term focused, instant gratification society. The bottom line: sustainability is about efficiency or doing more with less and wasting less. If we can do that, why wouldn’t we? View Presentation |
